In 2012 students payed an average of 23,872 dollars at 4 year universities for the year, not including books and supplies (U.S. Department of Education, 2014). This is nearly double the 14,216 paid in 1992 (U.S. Department of Education, 2014). Post- Secondary education is important not only for the financial security of the graduate but also to our national economy the government implement free education for students entering higher education because it would help our economy, work close the inequality gap, and people have a right to experience higher education. A large number of people highly educated in STEM or science, technology, engineering and math would allow for more minds to be able to work on new advancements in technology. One major advancement that the United States is missing out on rare earth metals. These metals are very important to building electronics and are present in almost any electronic made in the last 15 years (Bell,2012). The United States has deposits of these minerals, but we do not have the know how to make mining them safely and efficiently. Our minerals remain unused or sold off to larger producers in China for low margins.(Bell,2012) This is just one cutting edge economic opportunity that is going to waste in the US. If education was free it would allow more people to become educated in these fields, allow for more technological innovation and eventually lead to higher prosperity for the country as a whole. Many high school student and young adults who dream of becoming well educated are unable to because they do not have access to higher education due to their economic status. Nearly 85 percent of middle school aged children in the US say they would like to earn a college degree yet only 44 percent of students from poor families are enrolled by October following high school graduation (Haveman, 2006). Chapter 5 of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein Within this essay I intend to discuss how Frankenstein and his creature change and how subconsciously they love each other. Chapter 5 will be used to show different themes as well as seeing how Frankenstein acts around his creation. Also the way Frankenstein has played God will be seen in this chapter. I will start this essay by looking at chapter 5. Shelley shows, in chapter 5, Frankenstein and the creature’s reaction to the ‘creation’. This man obviously could not see the hideous face and inhuman like size of the creature. All the man could sense was the creature’s voice. The creature says a very personal and descriptive thing to the blind man. It goes ‘I am an unfortunate and deserted creature; I look around and I have no relation or friend upon earth. These amiable people to whom I go have never seen me and know little of me. I am full of fears, for if I fall there, I am an outcast in the world forever.’ This quote shows how the creature has developed mentally so much in so little time. He has already worked out that his image does not fit in with society and that if the delacies prejudge him for his image and hate him than that will break his heart. I personally felt very sorry at this time for the creature. The De Lacey family then return and the creature is beaten and then ‘quits the cottage’ where he spoke to the blind man. The creature then says at the beginning of chapter 6 ‘Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live?’ This quote makes the creature want to know the reason for his existence. Oceans Eleven Essay Todorovs theory consisted of six main elements they were: normality; disturbance; attempt to solve the solution; further complication; resolution and finally the lesson learnt. Another example of a narrative structure was a simple three-point element, which consisted of Equilibrium- the forces of potential conflict are in equal balance; secondly Disturbance- someone or something upsets the equilibrium and creates a problem. The situation becomes more complicated as they story progresses and finally the Resolution- the problem is solved and a new different, equilibrium is to established. The new equilibrium is different because life has been changed by what has happened. Like stories, a films narrative is structured so that we know the main situation that occurs and the main plot. Paragraph 5 Firstly I will be looking at the opening sequence of The Bone Collector (1999). The opening sequence of a film is very useful to the audience as the audience need to know the main elements of the film. The Bone Collector comes through this as we were introduced to the production team, which is Colombia Pictures and Universal Pictures, which are well known studios. Secondly we come across sketches using dull colours to show emotion and tense. We then see the actors names emerging through the sketches, one by one in a dull blue color in slow motion. This is a connotation of police as we associate police in blue. We see a lot of dullness, which makes us feel vulnerable. They use a pan shot to show the setting and all the information. We also get to see pictures of skeletons and dead people this shows us the genre and a bit about the plot. I think the reason for showing this is so that the audience gets a rough idea about the plot. Then we come across the title The Bone Collector, which appears in the same format as the names. This shows us it is as important as the actors. We see a profile of a police officer this depicts it is a crime detective, as it also shows serious facial expressions. During the opening sequence we hear the playing of high pitched violins and we also hear slow dramatic quire singing, this tries to create tension in the audience because of the dramatic music, we then hear a life support machine with thunder that emerges into the sound of a plane. Making two sound effects emerge together is a good way to connect two scenes together. Paragraph 6 In the opening sequence the first stage of the narrative structure we come across is the Normality. We come across this as this as we see the main star Lincoln Rhyme (a New York detective who is specializing in forensics (in bed, as a near-fatal injury left him paralysed and he is haunted by nightmares with a little to live. We then come across another main female character Amelia Donaghy who is trying to discover a case of middle aged couple that are abducted by a sinister cab driver. The director employs several editing techniques to come across to the audience about the plot. The director successfully comes across showing the plot in the opening sequence. Conclusion 1 Concluding, I will be comparing three crime films, which are Oceans Eleven (2002), The Bone Collector (1999) and Seven (1995). The comparisons between all three films are that they all have a romantic sub-plot. Another significant comparison is that when they find the dead bodies in The Bone Collector and Seven, they always have bad weather or dramatic music as well as dark night setting. Another comparison is the use of torchlights and shadows; most crime films use torchlights to show the genre. They also use instruments to create tension in the audience and also to leave the audience in Suspense. Conclusion 2 Overall I believe the film that will have the most success in the box office is Oceans Eleven. Sonia and Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment Sonia and Raskolnikov are two characters who connect with each other in the novel Crime and Punishment. They interact on multiple levels, sharing many likenesses. Both of these characters are at-times self-sacrificing, both are struggling for meaning in a dreary existence, and both are generally unhappy people, but brighten and seem to enjoy each other's presence--even when Raskolnikov is rebuking her religion. What is self-sacrifice, for which these characters and so many people around the world engage in? It is a desire to help those around us more than we wish to help merely ourselves. This desire is not normal human state, although it can be brought about easily by social pressures, and sometimes even political societies can compel this attitude. Sonia practices a form of benevolence for her family however. She takes her body off to the moral downfall by sacrificing it to others for money - money that will go to her starving, poor family. Though not his dominating state of mind or action, Raskolnikov does have temporal tendencies towards self-sacrifice. It seems that part of his state of mind when considering the murder of the pawnbroker is that he will be helping society as a whole - definitely a motive that comes from outside the self. Sonia and Raskolnikov share many characteristics that make them an interesting find for each other. A tendency to self-sacrifice for one, and a life of it for another, provides for an alloy of psychological likenesses which help the characters relate. Due in part to their self-sacrificing lives, both characters are also trying to search for meaning in the bleak reality which they are subjected to. Sonia finds this meaning in the Bible, in a belief in God. Raskolnikov writes his theory. He finds solace in thinking that he himself is a god-like creature; he believes he is extraordinary. A belief in being a subject of the Divine and thinking that there are two divisions of men is extremely close. Both of these characters also have their meaning attacked. Porfiry Petrovich attacks the theory of Raskolnikov. Perhaps as a reaction to this, Raskolnikov attacks the support for meaning in Sonia's life - God, the Bible, and her faith. The final glues that continually attract these two characters are the fact that all of their grim similarities bring them together so that they actually enjoy each other's presence. Although Raskolnikov berates her religion mercilessly, there have been at least two other major instances in which Raskolnikov has shown great charity and love toward Sonia and her family. Raskolnikov lives life according to his theory in his mind, and unfortunately he is not able to realize behaviors that connected with his moral code. Therefore by his own code, not even ours or society's, he is morally bankrupt. Yet Sonia and Raskolnikov enjoy each other's presence and time - misery loves company.
